Radley Metzger

One of the pioneers of American adult cinema, 'Radley Metzger' (qv) was born in New York. He first made a name in erotic cinema by importing and distributing European erotic films, including the Danish sex film _I, a Woman (1965)_ (qv). At around the same time Metzger decided to direct his own features, which quickly became renowned for their strong sense of composition, high-tone locations and edgy, erotic subject matter. Among his best-known softcore features are _Therese and Isabelle (1968)_ (qv), _Carmen, Baby (1967)_ (qv) and _Camille 2000 (1969)_ (qv), all of which were shot in Europe. Other notable Metzger films of the period include _The Lickerish Quartet (1970)_ (qv), _Woman of the Year (1973)_ (qv) and _Score (1974)_ (qv). Once hardcore porn came to dominate the US adult film market after _Deep Throat (1972)_ (qv), Metzger directed several highly-regard explicit features using the pseudonym "Henry Paris," including _The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann (1974)_ (qv), _Naked Came the Stranger (1975)_ (qv), _The Opening of Misty Beethoven (1976)_ (qv) and _Barbara Broadcast (1977)_ (qv).::A.
