Lukas Haas

Lukas was born on April 16, 1976 in West Hollywood, California. His Texas-born mother, 'Emily Tracy' (qv), is a writer, and his German-born father, Berthold Haas, is an artist. He has twin brothers, Simon and Nikolai. It's widely noted that Lukas was discovered at the age of five by casting director 'Margery Simkin' (qv) while he was in kindergarten.While his first screen role was as the youngest of the doomed children in the 1983 nuclear Holocaust film _Testament (1983)_ (qv), it was his second appearance, in _Witness (1985)_ (qv) opposite 'Harrison Ford' (qv) and 'Kelly McGillis' (qv), that earned attention and acclaim. In 'Peter Weir' (qv)'s 1985 film, Lukas portrayed Samuel, an Amish child who was the sole witness to an undercover cop's murder, and his work earned him starring roles in such films as _Lady in White (1988)_ (qv), _The Wizard of Loneliness (1988)_ (qv), and _Alan & Naomi (1992)_ (qv) - the latter film co-written by his mother.Lukas was subsequently nominated for an Emmy for his portrayal of AIDS victim, Ryan White, in the controversial TV movie, _The Ryan White Story (1989)_ (qv). He continued to distinguish himself in film in starring roles including: _Music Box (1989)_ (qv) with 'Jessica Lange' (qv) and director 'Costa-Gavras' (qv); _Convicts (1991)_ (qv) and _Rambling Rose (1991)_ (qv) (both with 'Robert Duvall' (qv)); and _Boys (1996)_ (qv) with 'John C. Reilly' (qv) and 'Winona Ryder' (qv).On stage, in 1988, Lukas performed alongside 'Steve Martin' (qv) and 'Robin Williams' (qv) in 'Samuel Beckett' (qv)'s "Waiting for Godot" at Lincoln Center in New York City for director 'Mike Nichols' (qv). He also starred with Martin in the film _Leap of Faith (1992)_ (qv).Lukas went on to work with directors 'Woody Allen' (qv) in _Everyone Says I Love You (1996)_ (qv), 'Tim Burton' (qv) in _Mars Attacks! (1996)_ (qv), and 'Alan Rudolph' (qv) in _Breakfast of Champions (1999)_ (qv). He had a pivotal role in _Brick (2005)_ (qv), 'Rian Johnson' (qv)'s directorial debut with 'Joseph Gordon-Levitt' (qv). He next appeared in the 'Kurt Cobain' (qv)-inspired _Last Days (2005)_ (qv), directed by 'Gus Van Sant' (qv), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Roles in _Material Girls (2006)_ (qv), slasher movie send-up _The Tripper (2006)_ (qv), _Who Loves the Sun (2006)_ (qv), _Gardener of Eden (2007)_ (qv), _While She Was Out (2008)_ (qv), and _Death in Love (2008)_ (qv) followed.Recently, Lukas had a supporting role in 'Christopher Nolan' (qv)'s _Inception (2010)_ (qv) opposite 'Leonardo DiCaprio' (qv), 'Elliot Page' (qv), 'Joseph Gordon-Levitt' (qv), 'Michael Caine' (qv) and 'Marion Cotillard' (qv). He then appeared in _Red Riding Hood (2011)_ (qv) for director 'Catherine Hardwicke' (qv), and _Contraband (2012)_ (qv), director 'Baltasar Kormákur' (qv)'s English-language remake of the movie he starred in, _Reykjavík - Rotterdam: Tödliche Lieferung (2008)_ (qv).Lukas was most recently seen in _Crazy Eyes (2012)_ (qv).
